CPD SHORT COURSES

ETS are pleased to be able to recommend CPD for any short course that you may be interested in. Andy Tomlinson was a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University before starting his own company CPD Dynamics Limited. With over 25 years contract research experience in noise and vibration, specialising in signal processing techniques, his areas of interest include dynamic analysis procedures, machine noise diagnostics, signature identification and classification and vibration, climatic and shock testing. He has worked for Rank Precision Industries and his MPhil degree was carried out under contract with the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.

CPD Dynamics provide highly focused training for professionals wishing to gain specialist knowledge and skills in Noise and Vibration measurement, analysis and control, Environmental Test Engineering and Signal Processing.

CPD Dynamics feature a range of short courses aimed at those involved in engineering that require a practical introduction to the above topics. We also deliver and develop tailor-made training and development programmes for clients.

Examples of short courses

Current programme

VIBRATION TESTING - 2 day short course

19 - 20 January 2011, presented by Andy Tomlinson

Introduction

This course provides an introduction to the technology of vibration testing and outlines the principal features of typical vibration test programmes. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of the subject and only the essential theory is covered.

The course will include the use and development of test equipment for the artificial generation and measurement of appropriate vibration environments. Instruction will be given in data analysis and interpretation in relation to technical specifications.

Participants

No prior knowledge of Vibration Testing is required. Mathematics will be kept to the minimum necessary for an understanding of the subject.

Outline syllabus

Demonstrations

Practical demonstration sessions will be held each day to reinforce concepts introduced in the lectures. E/M shaker characteristics, vibration control strategies and analysis pitfalls will be included.

Location

The course will be held at the Novotel Milton Keynes. Special discount rates for CPD Dynamics course delegates are available. If you need overnight accommodation, please book directly with the hotel.

Course fee

The short course fee of £465 includes tuition, course notes, lunches, refreshments and a course dinner on 19 January 2011 (excludes overnight accommodation).

CLIMATIC TESTING - 2 day short course

23 - 24 February 2011, presented by Andy Tomlinson

Introduction

Modern sophisticated equipment is often required, not only to survive, but also to operate to a defined standard under adverse climatic conditions. To demonstrate the survival capability and reliability of equipment it is necessary to simulate these conditions in the laboratory.

This two-day course provides a practical introduction to Climatic Testing and will cover general principles, test facility requirements and practical test procedures.

The design aspects of climatic test chambers will be covered to the depth necessary for the user to fully understand their operation. An important part of equipment usage is the measurement, recording and control of the various parameters, with emphasis on calibration, accuracy, repeatability and uncertainty of measurement.

Comprehensive notes covering all the lectures will be provided and these serve as a valuable reference after the course.

Participants

No prior knowledge of Vibration Testing is required. Mathematics will be kept to the minimum necessary for an understanding of the subject.

MECHANICAL SHOCK TESTING - 1 day short course

7 April 2011, presented by Andy Tomlinson

Introduction

The reliability of engineering products can be severely impaired by exposure to mechanical impact and shock. During manufacture, packaging, transit and service, the shock environment plays a critical role in product survival. As a result, the simulation of a shock environment is becoming a more important aspect of product and production testing in order to meet technical specifications.

This one-day course provides a practical introduction to shock testing techniques. The principles of shock testing machines and the artificial generation and measurement of shock environments will be covered, together with a review of analysis techniques and the interpretation of shock data in relation to standards and specifications.

Participants

It is desirable, although not essential, that delegates have an elementary knowledge of practical vibration testing such as that provided by the CPD Dynamics short course Vibration Testing.

The short course fee of £220 includes tuition, course notes, lunch, and refreshments. (excludes overnight accommodation).

PRACTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING - 2 day short course

16 - 17 March 2011, presented by Andy Tomlinson

Introduction

Digital signal processing equipment is widely used by engineers and scientists in the investigation of environmental and engineering problems. The aim of this two-day intensive short course is to provide a basic understanding of the techniques of signal processing with particular emphasis on the practical aspects of the subject.

Delegates will benefit from a careful balance of teaching and practical demonstration sessions. Comprehensive notes covering all the lectures will be provided.

Participants

The course will be of value to those wishing to acquire a basic practical understanding of the techniques of signal processing. No prior knowledge of the subject is required. Mathematics will be kept to the minimum necessary for an understanding of the subject.

Location

The course will be held at the Novotel Milton Keynes. Special discount rates for CPD Dynamics course delegates are available. If you need overnight accommodation, please book directly with the hotel.
